How to be Genuine + Grow Your Instagram Following

Okay, I know what you're thinking. You can't teach someone to be genuine. You're either a genuine person or you're not! But hear me out. Most people just need to be reminded to be genuine. So that's what i'm going to talk about today. How to be genuine, remember to be genuine, keep being genuine and how that will help you grow your social media following. While I have tons of tips to give on this topic, we are going to start with 3 today!

  1. The first step to being genuine is to be yourself. Yeah, I know everyone says that, but let me explain what I mean. No, you are not perfect Instagram squares in real life. Maybe you're messy. Nervous. Funny. or Shy. Maybe all of the above. Guess what? Those things are great! They make you, you. They are things your audience can relate to, and that's what you want to happen most of all. So for example, I'm a Mom, a person with a chronic illness, I have anxiety, I love to shop, I hate to cook, I'm engaged and NOT planning a wedding. All of those facts are things that other people can relate to me about. So i'll make sure I share that stuff because then we can ENGAGE and talk about it. It's social media, and the key is to be social. Share, talk, relate, engage.
  2. A lot of people ask, but what if i'm selling a product? And that's a good question. I'm here to tell you that you're not only selling a product, you're mostly selling yourself. Let's say you sell candy bars. There's a whole slew of people out there selling candy bars too. You've got big companies, local companies, organic, handmade, etc. The candy bar options are limitless for your audience. This is why you want to make yourself stand out. By being personal and not just SELLING you can create an advantage over all the other candy bar companies. So you're selling a caramel candy bar and you're posting a picture of it on Instagram today? You might be tempted to tell the price, the ingredients, how you made it. STOP. Instead tell a story about how your Grandpa used to always carry caramel cubes in his pockets at church. Whenever you got antsy from listening to a long sermon he would take two out. One for you and one for him and he'd slip it to you without your Mother noticing. Now whenever you think of caramel, you think of Grandpa. Grandpa would have loved this candy bar, and you wish you could share it with him today. Ask your audience "Who would you share this candy bar with?"
  3. Give REAL responses. Yep. It's as simple as that. Don't just reply with "Thanks!" Reply with "Thank you! I'm so glad you're going to try out candy bars! Pleases let me know what you think!" or "Thank you! I was so nervous I couldn't make a caramel bar more tasty than my favorite big brand, but I think I made it happen!" These are genuine comments that a reader can truly appreciate. That's the advantage with small shops - you can talk to THE person directly. It's not like you can speak to the creator of the Snickers Bar, is it?  Make your audience feel special, cared for and a part of the community.

So there's the first 3 ways to be genuine and increase your social media following at the same time. It boils down to: BE RELATABLE. BE FRIENDLY. ASK QUESTIONS. RESPOND LIKE A REAL PERSON.

I challenge you to take one day and try these tips out on an Instagram, Facebook, Blog or social media post! I have a feeling you will see more engagement and maybe even new followers! As always, I want to hear how it goes. Let me know in the comments!

Ultimate Fortnite Christmas Gift Guide

If you're anything like me you probably have someone in your family who plays the video game Fortnite. Or at least you've heard about it. For me, it's my 12 year old son. He seriously lives, breathes and only cares about this video game.

If you don't know what it is: It's an online video game that you play with 99 other players at the same time. It's simply a version of the Hunger Games... last man standing wins. As you're playing you can build structures to hide in, find ammo and weapons to keep yourself safe, and every so often (think 60 seconds) the world you're in gets smaller and smaller until you're right beside the same guys you've been trying to hide from! (exciting right? yeah, not to me either, but I totally understand why the video game players in our life are simply obsessed.)
This year Fortnite gifts are going to be THE gifts for kids ages 8+ and probably even the adults in your life. Don't worry, I searched the internet over …

Time and Tru at Walmart

If you've been following me for very long you KNOW I shop at Walmart... a lot. In fact, there's a Walmart right across from the entrance to our neighborhood. I'm in there almost every day it feels like. So of course when i'm whizzing through the grocery aisles, sometimes the Women's clothing will catch my eye.

Walmart has a newer brand in their clothing department. It's called Time and Tru and I'm pretty sure it's Walmart's answer to Target's Universal Thread line that's doing so well. I say Bravo to Walmart. It's way cooler and more chic than anything they've ever offered, and it can be mixed and matched to help you get more bang for your buck.

If you follow me on Instagram you can watch my Try-On session from Walmart on my stories or in story highlights titled "Walmart Style Faves". Let me know what you think! And if you're here to find the links to some of the items, well, I got you! Here we go.
